About Mona Kay Gorman
Curator and Owner of Blissfully Refurbished

My career in refinishing furniture began at my neighbor's curb.

I have always had a love of furniture, in particular, vintage pieces from the 1930's - 1970's.  At some point, I began to notice how frequently a gorgeous dresser or nightstand was left curbside for disposal.  In 2008 I picked up my first piece from a neighbor’s trash.  It was around fifty years old with beautiful details and turned spindle legs.  I painted and distressed it (random sanding and paint removal to create a faux, aged look) and sold it right away.

Since then, I have hand-painted and sold furniture found at the curb for disposal, as well as pieces donated from friends who no longer want them.  The joy of turning cast-offs into beautiful show-stopping pieces feeds my creative side and allows me to perform the best kind of up-cycling - turning discarded pieces into something wonderful.  Please visit my shop to see items for sale.

Since so many people have asked me how I choose my furniture, how I decide what color to paint it, and how I actually do the painting, distressing, and waxing, I have begun to develop resources to answer these questions. Look for blog posts with tips and tricks, and please visit my resource page for some wonderful inspiration and supplies.

I recently re-located to my dream house in Hopewell, NJ - home of multiple antiques shops including the famous Tomato Factory. I have two grown children and a border collie named Sydney.  All three are greatly beloved, one is incredibly spoiled.

About Blissfully Refurbished furniture:

Blissfully Refurbished furniture is hand-painted, and waxed for protection and for a lustrous finish.  I only work on furniture in very good condition, or on pieces which require only light repair (small cracks, scratches, stains, light drawer repair, etc.).  The style of the finished pieces has been described as “French Provincial”, “Romantic”, “Cottage”, or “Farmhouse”, and fits with most decorating styles.

The hand-painted and waxed finish of Blissfully Refurbished furniture can be maintained with regular dusting, and cleaned with a damp cloth.  Fingerprints can be removed by rubbing with a dry, soft cloth.  Coasters should be used to protect surfaces from beverage glasses.
